Creating a Health Promoting School

Message from Tracy Wright, Instructor:

Welcome to the webpage for the Adams State Graduate Course titled “Creating a Health Promoting School.” This is a 2 credit-hour, (mostly) independent study course, open to active co-leaders of school-level Coordinated School Health teams.

The intent of this independent study course is to support your work on your school’s Coordinated School Health Team and help you “go deeper” in your understanding of research and practices that strengthen the link between health and academics.

You will be working primarily on your own with guidance and resources from RMC and your district or regional coordinator.  We will support your work throughout the school year with information and resources to help you complete the independent study course and the implementation of Coordinated School Health in your school. I welcome your questions and comments during the school year.

The course begins in October 2009 and ends in May 2010. Course registration ends on October 31, 2009. The cost of the course for 2 graduate credit hours is $150. For registration information, contact Paula Roseboom at paular@rmc.org.

Assignments

Class assignments will be posted on this website at least three weeks before they are due. Send your assignments to me by the due date to receive full credit.  Please email your assignments to tracyw@rmc.org. Remember, five percent will be deducted for late assignments. I’ll send you an email acknowledging receipt of each assignment and the number of points you received.

I am looking forward to working with you this year–and providing guidance, technical assistance and resources–as you implement your Coordinated School Health program. Please contact me if you have questions, concerns, or ideas about how to improve the course.

Assignments

Listed below are your assignments for this course. If you have any questions about how to complete an assignment, please email Tracy at tracyw@rmc.org.

An archive of previous assignments can be found here.

An important note to all independent study participants:

In an effort to help with your schedules, while still fulfilling the requirements for graduate credit, I have combined assignments 7 & 8, altered the content, and moved the due date to the end of April. Also, assignment #9 will be deleted and your final assignment – writing a success story using the approved template – will be worth 15 points rather than 5, as stated in the original Course Summary. This final assignment will be due by May 31, 2010. Hopefully this will help!

Assignment #s 7 AND 8 (combined)
Coordinated School Health Team Meeting Discussions: District-level Policies AND Best Practice Implementation Progress Report
Due by April 30th, 2010
15 points

During the completion of assignment #6, you became aware of district-level policies that support CSH and where your work may intersect with such policies.

Assignment #7 calls for you to lead a discussion with the rest of your CSH team regarding the implications (if any) for implementation of those policies at the school level.  For example, if there is a district level policy around healthy foods at school but your school site is not fully implementing that policy, you may choose to work on that policy’s implementation at the building level within your SHIP.

Assignment #8 calls for you to lead a discussion with the rest of your CSH team on how best practices are being utilized to implement your SHIP. By this time, your SHIP has been submitted. However, many of you will not be working on the implementation of that SHIP this year. That is fine.

For this assignment, please complete the “Team Discussions and April Progress Report” worksheet. This is the only document you need to complete to receive credit for these two assignments.

As always, if you have any questions about an assignment, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

To receive credit for this assignment your must:

  1. Download and complete the attached worksheet (this one worksheet covers BOTH assignments 7 & 8). Email the worksheet to Tracy (tracyw@rmc.org) by April 30th, 2010.
