Coordinated School Health

Roadmap to Healthy Schools

The Colorado Model

Colorado is emerging as a leader in implementing coordinated school health (CSH) programs. Across the state, there are over 100 school-level coordinated health teams, representing 21 school districts. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provides funding for some of these teams through the Colorado Department of Education (CDE) infrastructure grant, and the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE), Steps to a Healthier Colorado. Other teams receive funding through LiveWell, a partnership between The Colorado Health Foundation, Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, and Kaiser Permanente.

In 2006, a multi-agency collaborative was formed between RMC, CDE and CDPHE. This collaborative combined funding from a variety of sources, including CDPHE’s State Tobacco Education and Prevention Partnership and the Colorado Physical Activity and Nutrition Program. Our combined efforts provided funding to 22 additional schools for the 2006-07 school year. Plans are being made to expand the collaborative and fund additional schools in 2007-08.

The Roadmap to Healthy Schools was developed in response to an identified need for a step-by-step guide for implementing coordinated school health at the building level. The Roadmap is user-friendly, based on best practices, and grounded in the experience of Colorado’s CSH teams.
