H.E.A.R.T. Module

Module Overview

Assessment Module Description


This assessment module focuses on the students’ ability to demonstrate effective refusal skills. The module culminates with students presenting a campaign message that encourages other students to use refusal skills and make good choices in their lives. Leading up to the final performance assessment, students will identify refusal skills messages and brainstorm ideas for their H.E.A.R.T. presentation.

National Health Education Standards

Standard #1 Core Concepts—Students will comprehend concepts related to health promotion and disease prevention. (CC)
Standard #4: Interpersonal Communication—Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks. (IC)

Students will understand that

  • Effective interpersonal communication skills can enhance health.
  • Interpersonal communication skills can be used to avoid or reduce health risks.
  • What would make one communication skill more appropriate than others?
  • What factors influence the way we communicate with others?
  • What do effective communication skills look like in practice?
  • How do we know communication is effective?

Health Concepts

Health Skills

Students will know:

  • Key terms: verbal communication, negotiation, nonverbal communication.
  • Effective communication skills for a variety of audiences and situations (e.g., with family, peers, and others).
  • Effective communication skills for negotiation regarding the benefits of being drug-free.
  • Specific refusal skills when resisting alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.

Students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate effective negotiation skills to enhance health in situations dealing with alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
  • Demonstrate effective refusal skills when pressured to use alcohol, tobacco, or other drugs.
