for Tobacco Prevention
The Roadmap to Healthy Schools
The Roadmap to Healthy Schools was developed in response to an identified need for a step-by-step guide for implementing coordinated school health at the building level. The Roadmap is user-friendly, based on best practices, and grounded in the experience of Colorado’s CSH teams. For information on the Roadmap: Click Here.

Essential Components of Effective Tobacco Prevention for Schools
Comprehensive school-based tobacco prevention programs include
the following five essential components:
- Policy
- Classroom Instruction
- Cessation
- Parent and Family Involvement
- Community Linkages
These components are based on the Guidelines for School Health Programs
to Prevent Tobacco Use and Addiction (published by the CDC) and
the Oregon Health Division’s 2001 School Progress Report. Professional
development and evaluation are integral to the success of each component.

Prevention Information
Center
The Prevention
Information Center (PIC) is a project of the Rocky Mountain
Center for Health Promotion and Education (RMC). The PIC receives
funding from the Colorado Department of Human Services, the Alcohol
and Drug Abuse Division (ADAD), and the Colorado Department of Public
Health and Environment.
The PIC serves as a resource to increase statewide capacity for the
prevention and treatment of substance abuse by aiding in the identification
of reliable consumer and professional health information, research findings,
and best practices.
The PIC offers:
- A large collection of books and videos available for loan, without
cost to Colorado residents.
- A clearinghouse of free and cost-recovery materials (brochures, pamphlets,
posters, research reports and resource guides) to aid in the prevention
of alcohol and other drug problems.
Please note: The PIC no longer disseminates materials for Colorado’s
State Tobacco Education and Prevention Partnership (STEPP) . The STEPP fulfillment center for free tobacco prevention materials is available directly at www.steppitems.com.
Local Health Agencies
Local Health Agencies (LHAs) in Colorado receive funding for community-based
tobacco prevention. LHA staff can be valuable partners for schools
and districts. Contact your LHA tobacco prevention specialist to
find out more about tobacco prevention and cessation resources for your
students, staff, and families.

A Pinch of Truth
RMC is pleased to announce the availability
of a new tobacco prevention resource called "A Pinch
of Truth: Educating Youth About Spit Tobacco". Each “Pinch
of Truth” resource kit includes 8 to 10 fully developed lesson
plans aimed at educating youth about the dangers of spit tobacco. The
lessons were created to supplement a comprehensive tobacco prevention
program and are appropriate for middle and high school students. This
resource was developed with funding from the Colorado Department of Public
Health and Environment’s State Tobacco Education & Prevention
Partnership (STEPP).
Schools may order their free copy of "A Pinch of Truth” by ordering online at www.steppitems.com
