Finding the right health education curriculum can feel like searching for a needle in a haystack. Let us give you the tools you need to structure your search.
The Health Curriculum Analysis Tool (HECAT) is an assessment tool developed by the Centers for Disease Control. The HECAT contains guidance, appraisal tools, and resources to conduct a clear, complete, and consistent examination of health education curriculum. HECAT results can help schools select or develop appropriate and effective curricula, and improve the delivery of health education. This tool is aligned with the National Health Education Standards and based on the Characteristics of Effective Health Education Curricula that help young people adopt and maintain health-enhancing behaviors. This training is intended to prepare classroom health educators and administrators to use the HECAT to assess the comprehensiveness and efficacy of their health education curricula. A particular emphasis is put on deepening educators’ ability to identify the ways in which curricula effectively enhance students’ opportunities to build health knowledge and skills necessary for maintaining health-enhancing behaviors. Participants will be provided a copy of the HECAT tool along with resources to help facilitate the process of using the HECAT.
