Coordinated School Health 101

The health of youth is linked to their academic success, and the academic success of youth is linked with their health. Schools cannot achieve their primary mission of education if students and staff are not healthy.  Thus, schools play an important role in supporting the health and well-being of students, families, and staff. Coordinated School Health provides a school and/or district with a framework for planning and coordinating health-related strategies, programs, and policies. This training will help your school and/or district implement a coordinated school health process that is directed toward the needs of students and staff, responsive to the needs of families, and reflective of the values of your community.

Training Objectives:

As a result of this one-day training, participants will be able to:

  • Utilize the Coordinated School Health (CSH) Model to create a healthy school environment;
  • Explain the role and expectations of a school-level CSH Team;
  • Describe the purpose for conducting a school health needs assessment;
  • Identify the components of an effective School Health Improvement Plan (SHIP); and
  • Utilize strategies to implement CSH in your school.

Coordinated School Health 201

Coordinated School Health provides schools and districts with a framework for planning and bringing together health-related strategies, programs, and policies. Schools must go beyond the basic implementation of the Coordinated School Health framework to create lasting policy, systems, and environmental changes. This training will help you institutionalize this coordinated approach to improve students’ health and their capacity to learn through the support of families, communities, and school staff working together.

Training Objectives:

As a result of this one-day training, participants will be able to:

  • Identify strengths and challenges to successfully implementing Coordinated School Health (CSH);
  • Use best practices when implementing the eight components of CSH;
  • Align CSH efforts with the District Wellness Policy;
  • Maintain enthusiasm for creating a culture of health and wellness; and
  • Share CSH successes with staff, administrators, parents, school board members, and community representatives.

School Health Index

Schools across the country have made many changes in their school health guidelines and safety policies and programs after implementing the School Health Index (SHI). This self-assessment and planning guide enables schools to identify the strengths and weaknesses of their policies and programs for promoting health and safety, and develop an action plan for improving the school environment. The School Health Index involves teachers, parents, students, and the community in improving school policies, programs, and services.

Training Objectives:

As a result of this webinar, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the purpose of the School Health Index;
  • Explain the rationale for the suggested process for completing the School Health Index
  • Complete all eight modules of the School Health Index; and
  • Prioritize their School Health Index results.

This training can also be conducted in person.
